CHURCH HILL – Janet L. “Jan” Whitaker, 77, went home to be with her Lord Saturday, April 6, 2019 at the Holston Valley Hospital following an extended illness.
Mrs. Whitaker was born in Big Stone Gap, VA but had lived the majority of her life in Church Hill. She had previously been a long-time member of Central Assembly of God, but Sullivan Baptist had been her home church for the last several years.
She is preceded in death by her parents; Eldridge and Nora Snodgrass Jones.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years Ernest “Butch” Whitaker, sons; Ernest “Chip” Whitaker II and wife, Teresa, Steve Whitaker and wife, Julie, granddaughter, Courtney Whitaker, special friend of the family Terry Bivens. Brother; Charles Jones and wife, Rita, sister, Maysel Hutson and husband, Roy, 3 step brothers and a step sister, special father-in-law; Sherman Whitaker, special brother-in-law, Tommy Pippin and special sister-in-law, Nickie Pippin and several special nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday, April 11 at the Johnson-Arrowood Funeral Home and anytime at the home residence. A funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 PM Thursday in the funeral home chapel with special family friend and Pastor Rev. Jeff Strong officiating. A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 PM Friday, April 12, 2019 at the Liberty Hill Cemetery with Malen Marcum, Mike Hutson, Wesley Hutson, Tommy Pippin, Don Pippin, Shawn Moore, Robby Kennedy, and Aaron Marshall serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are David Hutson, Tim Hutson, Tivis Marcum, Sean
Fansler, Bobby Mullins, and Scott Rogers. Those wishing to attend the graveside services are asked to meet at the funeral home by 12:15 PM Friday to go in procession to the cemetery.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of NHC Kpt and the 5th floor ICU staff of Holston Valley Hospital for their loving care for Jan during these very difficult times.
