Bobby Joe Rakes, Sr. MT. CARMEL – Bobby Joe Rakes, Sr., passed away on Tuesday (April 1, 2014) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following an extended illness. He was born on August 14, 1940 in Clintwood, VA but had resided in Church Hill and Mt. Carmel, TN most of his life. Mr. Rakes honorably served in the United States Army at Ft. Knox, KY. He was a member and Past Master of Clay Masonic Lodge #386 and also served as Secretary of the Lodge for several years. He was a Past High Priest of Church Hill Chapter #238, Royal Arch Masons and was a KCCH of the Knoxville Consistory of Scottish Rite Masons. He retired from the United States Postal Service in 1997 after 32 years of employment. He was a member of West Ridge Presbyterian Church in Mt. Carmel. He was an avid fisherman until his health prevented it. Bobby loved being outside enjoying nature. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Rakes, parents, Beldon and Virgie Rakes, three brothers, Furl Rakes, Everett Rakes, and G.C. Rakes, three sisters, Fern Rakes, Rosemary Rakes McKenzie and Eva Rakes Keith. He is survived by his children and grandchildren: son, Bobby Joe Rakes, Jr., daughters, Dr. Kimberly Rakes Stephens and her husband, Barry, Lynn Rakes Senter and her husband, Terry, two step sons, Tom Bowers and his wife, Patti, Tim Bowers and his wife, Angie, his beloved grandchildren, Ryan and Tyler Senter, Olivia and Caroline Stevens, Philip and Catherine Bowers, Matt and Carissa Bowers, two sisters, Faye Rakes Farmer and Shirley Rakes DePriest, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Calling hours are from 6 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at Johnson – Arrowood Funeral Home of Church Hill. Funeral services will be conducted 8:00 P.M. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jeff Morelock officiating. A Masonic service conducted by the Clay Masonic Lodge #386 will be conducted prior to the service. Graveside services will be conducted 10:00 A.M. Friday at Hawkins County Memorial Gardens. Everyone wishing to attend is asked to meet at the cemetery by 9:45 A.M.  Pallbearers will be members of the Clay Masonic Lodge #386. Honorary bearers will be his Grandsons. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the West Ridge Presbyterian Church, Mt. Carmel, TN.
