CARMEL- Edith Mae (Sweets) Barrett McMurray, 88, passed away on Wednesday (February 18, 2015) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.She was a graduate of Church Hill High School where she was on the women’s basketball team. Edith worked at TEC for over 10 years in the lab and was a member of the league basketball team there. She quit work to raise a family and be a homemaker where through the years she was very involved in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives. She was a Cub Scout leader, a Girl Scout leader, and active member in the PTA. She was also in band boosters and whatever activity her kids were involved in she was there. Edith was active in church all of her life. Besides being a pastor’s wife, she was a Sunday school teacher and was always involved in bible school. She was a leader at Mt. Moriah Bible Camp during the summers. She was also in the choir at Lewis Lane Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member and servant of the Lord for over 30 years. Her greatest joy in life was serving the Lord and reading her bible and sharing the word. She touched everyone’s life who met her and was always willing to listen to people. Edith’s hobbies included reading her Bible faithfully, gardening, sewing, sports, and she loved to travel and do tongue twisters and say her ABC’s backwards.She is preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Jess McMurray, parents, John and Sudie Barrett, brothers, Efferd, Ellis and Ernest Barrett, sisters, Evelyn Light, Effie Marshall, and Edna Hicks, infant brother, Eliza Barrett, and Infant sister, Elsie Barrett. Great grandson, Titus Jones.She is survived by her sons, Ronald McMurray and his wife, Bea of Knoxville, TN, Darrell McMurray and wife, Sheila of Colorado, daughter, Rita Linkous of Church Hill, grandsons, Travis McMurray and wife, Tara, Kevin mcMurray and fiancé, Billie Otto, Chris Jones and wife, Brooke, Dustin Jones and wife, Sarah, Adam McMurray and wife, Devin, granddaughter, Tiara Linkous, great granddaughter, Piper McMurray, great grandsons, Silas Jones, Maddox Jones, and Henry Jones. Sisters, Elwanda Johnson and Eloise Dickson and numerous nieces and nehews, special friends, Joann Gilliam who has been family through the years.(DUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS SERVICES HAVE BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL SUNDAY AND MONDAY)(CALLING HOURS ARE FROM 4 TO 6 PM SUNDAY AT THE JOHNSON-ARROWOOD FUNERAL HOME. SERVICES WILL BE CONDUCTED 6 PM IN THE FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL WITH REV. Her sweet smile, kindness, love of life, laughter, and her many prayers throughout this life are immeasurable.
