“I have fought a good fight and have kept the faith” KINGSPORT – Vernon D. Cox, 91, of The Village at Allandale, Yesterday’s Place where he was lovingly cared for the past four years. He was formerly of Lloyd’s Chapel Road, Mount Carmel, where he lived for 64 years. He passed away Saturday (July 5, 2014) at Indian Path Medical Center following an extended illness. Mr. Cox was a native of the Ford Town community near Gray where he was a member of the Ford Town Baptist Church before moving to Mount Carmel 64 years ago and joining Mount Mitchell Primitive Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of J. P. Stevens Company and was a Veteran of World War II serving in the Air Force. He was a life time member of the DAV and a member of the American Legion. He is preceded in death by his wife, Anna Hurd Cox, his parents, Dee Cox and Roxie Cox Hamilton, three sisters, Velma Hamilton, Monnie Thomas and Pauline Chatman, half sister, Hazel Hite and half-brothers, Carson Cox and Rev. Burl Cox. Surviving to mourn his passing, one daughter, Janice Chatman, Mount Carmel; one grandson, Kevin Chatman, Mount Carmel; and the pride of his life, one great grandson, Brady Chatman; one half brother, Charles Cox, Gray, TN The family extends a heartfelt thanks to all the staff and residents of Yesterday’s Place and also Mary and Emily, 5th floor nurses at Indian Path, and also the Church Hill EMS. Calling hours are from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at Johnson-Arrowood Funeral Home. Services will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 P.M. in the funeral home chapel with Elder Fred Gilreath and Elder Glenn Williams officiating. Burial will follow with military rites at Church Hill Memory Gardens.
