CHURCH HILL – Alvin York Hurd, 84, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 27, 2018.
York was raised in the Lewis Lane community and graduated from Church Hill High School in 1953. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. York was a 41-year employee of Mead Corporation. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Church Hill. He was a 50-year member of Clay Lodge #386 & Jericho Shriners. He had served on the board of directors of Mead Credit Union.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Doyle and Janie Hickman Hurd; grandparents, A.D. and Martha Jones Hurd; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harmon and Beatrice Cavin; special aunt, Betty Alley; and one nephew.
York is survived by his wife, Patricia (Patsy) Cavin Hurd; adopted family, Jon, Ginger and Jonathan Light; special friends, Carolyn and Jason Light; a niece and two nephews and several cousins.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, October 29, 2018 at the Johnson-Arrowood Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 PM in the funeral home with Rev. Gary Gerhardt & Rev. Mitch Russell officiating. Masonic services will be conducted on Monday in the funeral home chapel by Clay Lodge #386. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at Liberty Hill Cemetery. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 9:45 AM.
The family would like to thank the staff of NHC and the 3rd floor hospice staff of Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center and his caregiver Gale Fletcher.
