I was so sad to hear of Mr. Hutchens passing. He left such an impression on my life from my days at CHHS to VHS. He invited me back to speak to his classes before he retired, and it almost felt like I had never left VHS. Coach was a true educator, and he was also very humorous. I like to think our crew from '82 made him smile more than a few times. I look forward to our reunion one day. I pray God blesses and comforts the family.

Mr. Hutchens was one of my favorite teachers at Church Hill High School. I was in his physical science class my freshman year in 1970-1971. He made it very interesting and I enjoyed it very much. He was always so soft spoken and helpful. I can picture him walking down the hall with his camera on his side. Praying God will comfort his family during this trying time. God rest his soul.

Thoughts & prayers to the family. I met Dennis thru my work. He would come to the drive thru window & always have his little dog with him, he loved his pet. I asked if he would mind photographing our mini schnauzers, he came to the house & did several shots-said it was a lot easier than weddings! He was a kind man that will be remembered by many. May God Bless you many happy memories.

My condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Hutchens. I had the pleasure of teaching with him at Volunteer High School for many years. He was a great gentleman and was admired for his friendliness, his special talents for teaching and photography, and his concern for others. Having him as my wedding photographer will always be a special memory for me. It was such an honor to know him. Sending prayers and my deepest sympathy. Karen Hyder

From playing in the Kenner yard beside his home place in the early 1940's, to having chats by the Green Belt close to his home in Kingsport, Dennis and I have remained friends. He was always a kind , gentle person and will be missed.

I wanted to share something I will always remember about Coach Hutchins. Several years ago I was coordinating a wedding. This wedding was special, the couple was trying to be as frugal as possible, but have a nice wedding. Someone put me in touch with Coach Hutchins, he remembered the couple from VHS, he knew how much a nice wedding would mean to this couple, as it was a new beginning for them. He agreed to take the wedding photos, he even brought another photographer with him. He did all of this at no charge. I saw him as giving, kind, professional photographer. I'm sure the bride and groom will remember his generosity. I know I do.

Mr Hutchens was one of the more instrumental people in my life. He had faith in me and my abilities. He was a highly moral and caring man. I spent hundreds of hours in high school learning the art and love of photography from him. His passion taught me to be passionate about things, and his example of working hard to accomplish, even in the face of obstacles, taught me endurance and perserverance. He wasn’t just a teacher, but a friend. He will be missed. Thanks for all you did, Mr. Hutchens!

Coach Hutchens was an awesome teacher. He always had a way to make Physical Science interesting, and he allowed me to use the photo room to turn negatives into photos!! Because of him I decided I loved science so much I went to Lab School. I now work in the pathology department for a Urology Group in Virginia Beach. Been a lab tech for over 30 years now. Rarely do you have teachers that truly inspire you. HE DID!!
