Family, I can't tell you anything you don't already know about Mr. Burchfield . . . well, maybe I can. He was almost everyone's favorite teacher at CHHS. It wasn't because he was easy. In fact, he was tough. It was because of that infectious personality that seemed to genuinely care about every student. Back to the story: In early 2018 when I was still Church Hill's police chief, we met in the line at the Food City deli. I was grabbing some lunch. We ended up talking for over 15 minutes. He was ahead of me in line. When I went to pay the cashier, she said, "that young man in the wheelchair paid for you." I turned to thank him profusely but he already had his hand out saying, "Mark, thank you for what you do out there." I shook his hand, said thank you, and we parted ways. That, in a nutshell, was Mr. B! We all need to aspire to show his love to everyone we meet.

To family of Mr. Birchfield, He was a dear dear man! I knew him from the endocrinology office . I was the diabetes education nurse . We always had the staff schedule him at a time we could spend extra time with him. It was not to give him more education ! It was to be able to talk with him . We would try and tell him something but he would come back with a joke ! He was such a treasure to know !!! I am sorry for your loss ! However, the time you had him was a blessing ! Find comfort and joy in knowing how many hearts and lives he touched !

I am heart broken to hear about Mr. B. Prayers go out to the family. As you have been told over and over by others, Mr. B was my favorite teacher. He was a tough teacher but made us want to learn. When I got to ETSU in my 3rd quarter of Biology, in which e were studying genetics, the tacher mentioned that i always handed my tests in first and always made As. I told him that I'd had it before. His reply was , at etsu.? I told him in hs. He couldn't believe that a high school in the 70s had such a high caliber biology teacher. But as everyone knew and still knows, Mr. B was the best. There will never be another teacher like him. I wish all teachers could be like him. Education needs his methods of teaching and his compassion for students!!

Travis and family, What a legacy your daddy left in his wake. Our daughter was one who loved having Mr. B as a teacher at Volunteer. She spoke with fondness of him as a teacher and mentor. Our hearts and prayers are with you in the days ahead.

Gary was such an inspiration to all of the you g adults who crossed his path. He helped me get through high school through many of his tid-bits of knowledge that quickly gave you a “moral of the story”. He loved us all. I spent most of my 10 year class reunion talking to Gary and my husband and I loved every minute of it.

Gary was such a great person. People were simply drawn to his personality and there were no strangers to him. He always had a big smile. My neighbor while growing up, a great teacher and an amazing person. You, my friend will be missed. Prayers to the family and God Bless.
