SURGOINSVILLE – Hanes Cooper, 91, passed away on Friday, October 6, 2023, following a brief illness.
Hanes was born in Hawkins County on September 30, 1932, to Dee and Molly Cooper. He attended Sun Rise School through the eighth grade. He retired from Eastman Kodak and was an Army Veteran. Hanes served several political offices including the Mayor of Surgoinsville, Hawkins County Commissioner, and also was in the Hawkins County Rescue Squad, Surgoinsville Volunteer Fire Dept. and the Hawkins County Ruritan. He was the type of person to give you the shirt off his back. He was known for his homemade rolls, that were served at many church suppers over the years Hanes leaves behind many dear best friends and many more because he never met a stranger.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Juanita Barton Cooper; sisters, Imogene Ratledge (Hugh) and Mary Lena Altom (Jack); brothers, Cecil Cooper, J.D. Cooper, and Doug Cooper.
Hanes is survived by his daughter, Robin Ford (Jeff), granddaughter, Taylor Hoffman; great grandchildren, Mya and Zaiden Bellamy; girlfriend, Linda Wilmoth and her son, Glenn Hall; brothers, Roy Cooper (Kay), and Robert Cooper (Betty); sister-in-law, Betty (Doug) Cooper; several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give special thanks to his caregivers, Sharon Carr, Anna Davis, Barbara Johnson, and the staff members at Amedysis Hospice that helped care for Hanes.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 8, 2023, at Bethel Community Cemetery with Rev. George L. Winegar, and Brian Burchfield officiating. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 1:45 PM.
Pallbearers will be Danny Alvis, Danny Lawson, Don Wright, Adam Strickler, Cody Bellamy, Tom Eidson, and Gerald Ward.
