MOUNT CARMEL – Norman Gray, Jr., 80, passed away on Monday, January 6, 2020, after a short period of declining health.
He was born in Detroit, Michigan on October 10, 1939, and moved to Hawkins County at an early age, where he lived the majority of his life. He graduated from Church Hill High School in 1957 and loved his classmates, still participating in most of the class reunions. He then attended East Tennessee State College.
Norman retired from Eastman Chemical Company in 1997 with 37 years of service. He was a veteran of the Tennessee Army National Guard and a member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, having served in various capacities over the years. His hobbies included table tennis, cycling, sharing family history and humorous stories, and following UT sports. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a friend to many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman R. Gray, Sr. and Opal Elizabeth Taylor Gray.
Norman is survived by his wife, Joanne; daughter, Lori England (Jeff); son, Nathan Gray (Keri); grandchildren, Grayson, Addison, Abigail and Olivia; brother, Jim Gray (Cathy); brother-in-law, Glen Mellons; special cousins, Pauline Marsh Carr and Pat Setser, along with several other cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 12:00 – 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at the Johnson-Arrowood Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Craig Needham and Rev. Larry Caylor officiating. The burial will follow in Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
