Opie W. Nelson “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord” Psalm 37:23 MT. CARMEL- Opie W. Nelson, 93, went to be with the Lord on Monday (April 21, 2014) at his home. He was born in Sullivan County and had lived in Mt. Carmel for the last 62 years. He retired from Holston Defense Corp on January 31, 1986 with more than 23 years of service. Mr. Nelson was a faithful member and deacon of Lewis Lane Central Baptist Church until declining health prevented him from attending. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, great grandfather and a friend to everyone he met. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Nelson in 2012; his parents, William Francis and Matilda Simpson Nelson; brothers, Sherman, Henry, Paul, and B.F. Nelson; sisters, Rosie Gragg and Leona Bolden. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Ralph and Nancy Jeter of Church Hill, Bill and Betty Hart of Mt. Carmel; grandson and wife, Barry and Mary Jeter of Church Hill, granddaughter and husband, Tim and Sabrina Thacker of Church Hill, great granddaughters, Leah Thacker and Sarah Jeter both of Church Hill; sisters, Ida Belle Morre, Etta Mae Snoddy and Sarah Pendarvis and husband, Maurice, all of Gallatin, TN along with several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are from 5 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at Johnson – Arrowood Funeral Home of Church Hill and anytime at the residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with his nephew, Bro. Tim Nelson, Pastor Kenny Hammond, and Pastor Andy Sensabaugh officiating. Graveside services will be conducted 3:00 P.M. Thursday at Liberty Hill Cemetery. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home by 2:15 to go in procession. Pallbearers will be J.W. Nelson, Barry Jeter, Tim Thacker, Jimmy Rowlett, Allen Berry, Billy Cradic, Cecil White, and Frankie Elliott. Honorary bearers will be Arvil Salyers, Dale Day, Bud Morelock, Wayne Duncan, and all of the men at Lewis Lane Church. Special thanks to his very very close caregivers, Cindi, Judy, and Eva. Also, special thanks to the Caris Hospice Staff, especially, Katina, Jennifer, Whitney, August, Cynthia, Darlyn, and Mike for all their tender care of daddy during his illness.
