Samuel Alexander (Alex) Armstrong, Sr. went to be with our Lord on December 16, 2015 at the age of 91 years. Alex was born on January 20, 1924 at Stony Point, Tenn. (near Surgoinsville), where he was a lifelong resident of Stony Point, which has been the Armstrong ancestral homestead since the 1780s. He was a registered member of the First Families of Tennessee.Mr. Armstrong was preceded in death by father Richard Stoddert Ewell Armstrong, Sr. (Father), mother Mary Ida Smith Armstrong (Mother), brothers and sisters Richard Ewell Armstrong, Jr., Jane Hamilton Armstrong, Sarah Burem Armstrong Young, and infant grandchildren Esther Grace Armstrong and Jonathan Armstrong.Alex is survived by Mary Ann Truss Armstrong – loving wife of 66 years – and sons Samuel Alexander (Zandy) Armstrong, Jr. & wife Beth of Greenwood, S.C., David Warner Armstrong & wife Linda of Prince George, Va., Charles Fletcher Armstrong & wife Becky of Knoxville, Tenn., and William Bernard (Ben) Armstrong & wife Brenda of Cleveland, Tenn. He leaves eight grandchildren – Daniel Armstrong of Wendell, N.C., William Armstrong of Memphis, Tenn., Joseph Armstrong of Johnson City, Tenn., Meelinda Armstrong of Prince George, Va., Jennifer Armstrong Belitz of Knoxville, Tenn., Laura Armstrong of Charlotte, N.C., Katie Armstrong Bosanko of North Little Rock, Ark., Chad Armstrong of Knoxville, Tenn. and 10 great-grandchildren.Through the years, Mr. Armstrong was an active member and elder of New Providence Presbyterian Church near Surgoinsville and New Hope Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Kingsport. A graduate of the University of Tennessee and member of Lambda Chi fraternity, Alex spent his life as a professional engineer, land surveyor, and farmer. Mr. Armstrong was a veteran of WWII, having served in the Pacific theater.Arrangements are being handled by Johnson-Arrowood Funeral Home of Church Hill, Tenn. Burial will be at the New Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery (Stony Point, Surgoinsville, Tenn.) on Saturday, December 19, 2006 at 1:00 pm with family and friends serving as pallbearers. A memorial service will follow at New Hope Evangelical Presbyterian Church (Lynn Garden, Kingsport, Tenn.) at 2:00 pm. The family will then receive friends at the New Hope Fellowship Hall next door to church.
