Church Hill, TN Master Sargent Hubert Ray Wells, Retired, age 80, of Church Hill, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2016 at the Mountain Home V.A. Hospital in Johnson City following a brief illness. Hubert was born in Lee County, VA on June 23, 1935. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1953 as a paratrooper, and served in Korea. Upon completion of that enlistment he went back to Lee County to work in the coal mines. He would laugh and say “THAT WAS NOT FOR ME”. He enlisted in the United Sates Air Force on February 14, 1958 as a mechanic on a C-130 and worked his way up to Flight Engineer. He completed over 1500 combat flying hours in Vietnam and was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses and countless air medals. Hubert retired from the military with 21 years of service to his beloved country.Hubert moved to Church Hill in 1975, he was employed at the Eastman Chemical Company. He started in salvage and completed two apprentice programs and retired from Coal Gas maintenance division in 1996. He graduated from Stead College with a Bachelor Degree in Applied Science.Hubert was an avid fisherman, hunter and enjoyed the outdoors. Our family has truly lost a great man, he was our rock and hero.He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Jo Wells in December of 2015, his parents, Mary Lee and Jerry Wells.Survivors include his children; Beverly Boling (Jimmy), Timothy Wells (Sherry), William Wells (Rhonda). Grandchildren; Steven Boling, Joseph Wells, Chasity Wells and Jacob Wells, great grandchildren; Jaxon Wells and Remington Wells and his pet cat Buttercup. Siblings; Naomi White, Flora Coomer, Jay Wells and Robert Wells, numerous nieces and nephews.Calling hours are from 5 to 7 pm Thursday at the Johnson – Arrowood Funeral Home, and anytime at the residence of his daughter Beverly Boling.Funeral services will be conducted Thursday in the chapel with Rev. Mitch Russell officiating. Military graveside services will be conducted 1 pm Friday at the Church Hill Memory Gardens with military rites conducted by the American Legion Posts 3/265 Honor Guard.Serving as pallbearers are Jacob Wells, Joseph Wells, Steven Boling, Brian Larkins, Tyler Nunley and Josh White.
