CHURCH HILL – Mr. Clay Fugate, 83, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 12, 2023, with his family by his side.

Clay was born on March 31, 1940, in Hancock Co. and lived most of his life in Hawkins Co. He was of the Baptist faith, and a faithful servant of the Lord. He retired from TRW as a machine operator. He was married to the love of his life, Shirley, for 63 wonderful years, and together they had a beautiful family whom Clay loved more than anything. He loved to spend time with his family, going fishing, loved all his animals, and was a caring friend to all he met.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Harrison and Lula (Johnson) Fugate; brothers, Elmer, Lester, Dick, Norman, Cecil, R.D., and L.B.; and his sister, Mary Jane Crawford.
Clay is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Mae (Short) Fugate; sons, Jonny Fugate (Kim), and Randall Fugate (Denise); grandchildren, Crystal Greene (Waylon), Keshia, Dustin (Tosha), and Casey Fugate (Malinda), Adam Smith, and Sharon Smith; 8 great grandchildren; brother, Jr. Fugate; sisters-in-law, Nadine and Opal Fugate; special brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Barbara Britton; several special nieces and nephews; as well as many extended family members, and dear friends.

The family would like to thank all the staff at Amedysis Hospice of Kingsport and Rogersville, who helped care for Clay.

A visitation will be held from 12:00-2:00 PM on Monday, October 16, 2023, at Johnson-Arrowood Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel with Pastor James Adams officiating. A graveside service will follow in procession to Christian Bend Cemetery. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
